Ototeman – Lisztomania
OPUS BALLET (IT) – Ototeman
/April 13, 2023 19:00/ 1st episode
Ototeman (the origin of the word „Totem”) is halfway between play and ritual, a fictional room where everything is possible, two souls who are closely connected in the ongoing search for the space of coexistence. Ototeman’s goal is to discover the most instinctive part of our being, which includes both body and mind. Ironic and sensual dance distinguishes these two shared yet alien bodily states, continuous and fragmented, balanced but uneven. Continuously, images and shifting figures appear that reflect how to be free. The two figures live fluidly, identifying themselves and their space playfully and easily; they do not want to smooth out their differences but to live in unity, to merge, to overlap, to create a more complex and conscious entity. Larger and stronger. We would like to invite the audience to experience a multisensory experience, as if the performance were a meditation, a therapy. We want to evoke the deepest memories and most spontaneous feelings of those who look at us through the music and images we create, also through the sounds. Ototeman was born from the visceral need for ease and personal freedom; it is a liberating ritual and a room that we want everyone to find within themselves.

Budapest Dance Theatre (HU) – Lisztomania
2nd round
In memory of Ferenc Liszt
The piece transports the viewer to a peculiar space, set in the world of imagination. An intangible existence, in which the adored musical genius appears in our current world, where values can often be incomprehensibly mixed up. The choreographer and our ensemble approach the legacy of the world-famous son of our homeland with respect. Zachár began his career at the Budapest Dance Theatre, then worked with the greatest choreographers in Holland. In this work, the spirit of the creators is connected through time and space.
The term “Lisztomania” was coined by Heinrich Heine in a newspaper article in which he used it with some disdain. It referred to the fact that Ferenc Liszt’s concert virtuosity in the 1840s caused abnormal reactions among his fans. Liszt was the first superstar who consciously built his image; he first gave a solo concert where he performed alone, turned his back on the audience, and with his fireworks-like virtuosity and deep emotionality captivated even his enemies. But he did all this not for the sake of self-indulgence, but to achieve the enhancement of the power of art and social esteem. Our choreographer and ensemble, with respect and pride, reach out to the legacy of our world-famous national hero.
