Description
János Arany's narrative poem is an eternal classic of Hungarian literature; its turns of phrase live on as proverbs in today's language, and the protagonist's character has been brought to life in opera, animated film, physical dance theatre performances, and monodrama.
Do we know the work well enough? – ask the creators of the Budapest Dance Theatre. It is striking, however, that compared to the grand works of János Arany's contemporaries, such as Sándor Petőfi's János Vitéz or Imre Madách's drama, The Tragedy of Man, Toldi has attracted less attention on the dance stage. The two choreographers, Alexandra Sághy and Attila Tókos, believe that with a total arts performance that builds on the formal language of contemporary dance theatre, but captures the imagination of the audience with the combined effect of prose, dance, music, and film, the world of Toldi can be made exciting for younger generations.
